Knee pain

Knee pain is a sign of aging. As people get older, knee pain starts to capture their whole lives. Knee pain can be extremely harsh to some people. Sometimes it does not allow you to even stand properly. Moreover, it alarms you every time you try to change the positions of your legs. You can’t bend or stretch your legs.

This is a permanent ailment. Medical science and Ayurveda don’t have a permanent solution to it. The reason for it being permanently untreatable is its natural causes and progression. However, there are several ways you can get relief from the symptoms. In this blog, we will discuss the details of Knee pain, its causes, and its Ayurvedic treatment.

Different Types of Knee Pain:

A healthy knee has bones, cartilage, and a very small amount of fluid that helps the joint to move freely. Cartilages work as paddings for knee bones. They don’t crush each other due to this padding and fluid. With age, this padding gets thinner. Our bodies also lose fluid. As a result, our joint bones rub each other and we start suffering from knee pain and inflammation.  There are other types of Knee Pain also. If you are a patient with regular knee pain, it is a must for you to understand what kind of disease you are dealing with.

  1. Iliotibial Band Syndrome or ITB
  2. Runners Knee or Chondromalacia and Patellofemoral Stress Syndrome
  3. Arthritis of Knee

Iliotibial Band Syndrome or ITB:

Iliotibial Band Syndrome is a name for outside knee pain. This pain ranges from the knee to the hip of a person causing the problem in stretching the legs. The portion shown in the picture below shows the position of the Iliotibial band. It’s a fibrous band that extends from hip to knee. The pain goes from knees to thighs gradually, causing a sensation on the length and side areas of your thighs. There is not much swelling in this syndrome. Also, the range of your knee joint would not be harmed. Iliotibial Band Syndrome occurs due to uneven leg length, bowed legs, or weak thigh muscles.

The runner’s knee can lead to inflammation and erosion, resulting in the breaking of the cartilage of the knee joint.  This type of knee pain is mostly seen in runners. People who engage themselves in activities that need a lot of bending of legs like jumping, sit-ups, and extra.

Arthritis of the Knee:

The most common knee pain is Arthritis. This comes naturally with age. The cartilage of your joints vanishes. Your two bones then start rubbing and crushing each other resulting in high pain. Patients with arthritis can get swelling and stiffness on a regular basis. Arthritis also can give you pain in the fingers, knees, and spine. There are different types of arthritis.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Knee Pain:

Ayurveda divides the problem of knee pain into two categories.

– Sandika Vatha

– Aama Vitha

Sandika Vatha is Osteoarthritis and Aama Vitha is Rheumatoid Arthritis. Note that Ayurveda deals individually with each human being. For any kind of critical ailment, it first understands the imbalance of Doshas in the patient. These Doshas are Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha

Ayurveda starts its treatment with food. If you have a bad diet or a weak digestive system, your body will automatically start releasing toxins instead of useful chemicals. Hence when toxins or Aama get accumulated in your body, you start feeling pain in your body. So the first thing Ayurveda will do is to pretreat your body by detoxifying and strengthening your body.

Ayurvedic Classification of Knee Pain:

Ayurveda has mentioned two different knee pains. One is inflammation that is caused due to Aama accumulation. This happens when your body starts accumulating a lot of toxins in itself. This type of knee pain is the initial stage for later severe knee pain disease.  For treating this, Ayurveda suggests we detoxify our bodies. The detoxification also goes in several steps. For lighter cases, Ayurvedic diets and some herbal meds are enough. For severe diseases, you must go through a complete detoxification process- Panchakarma.

Another one is Degenerative which is Vata Aggravation. This happens in older people. With age, our body starts losing regenerative ability. The capability of nutrient cells reduces in the body. As a result, you suffer from joint pain.  There is no permanent treatment for it. However, there are several herbs and medicine mixes. These medicines give strength to joints and help to regenerate cartilage.  Janu Basti is a very famous Ayurvedic treatment for knee pain issues.

Home Remedies for Knee Pain:

Ayurveda also suggests some home remedies that you can easily make in your home. You can use it for nourishing and strengthening them.

  1. Take some amount of coconut oil or olive oil in a bowl. Now keep it in hot water to make it a little warm. Apply it on your knees. Regular application will lower the pain.
