Ayurveda is a system of natural health care that started in India over 5,000 years ago. That includes balancing your mind and body together. Ayurveda says we are of three body types (doshas). It teaches us the diet and lifestyle we shall adapt to lead a healthy life. One of its major recommendations related to diet is not eating Egg Chicken or non-veg meat. 

Today we shall understand why Ayurveda keeps us off from these foods and hence the benefits of a plant-based diet.

Ayurveda has a strong view on Non-Veg foods.

According to Ayurveda, all foods can be classified into these three types in their attributes:

  • Sattvic Foods -The cleanest & most natural of foods supporting spiritual progression and peace. Food Examples: Fruits, Veggies, Whole Grains Nuts & Seeds Dairy if it is a part of your meal.
  • Rajasic Foods: While these are strong spicy foods will weaken the body and make us less energetic. These include spicy foods and caffeine as well a little bit of animal products.
  • Tamasic Foods: These foods are heavy & dully in nature, and tend to make you feel sluggish or lazy. These can be things like prepackaged foods, food scraps, and certain types of meats.

Ayurveda has always termed non-veg foods, like eggs, chicken, and meat to be Rajasic {trigger states of restlessness }and Tamasic{ darkest mode on the spectrum} food. Yes, they can stimulate the passions and activities (Rajas), but also induce a dull heaviness (Tamas) which will disturb mental/physical equilibrium.

Why should you avoid eggs, chicken, and meat? 

According to an Ayurvedic view, these eggs as well as chicken and meat contain some qualities that can disrupt the harmony in the human body:

Difficult to digest: 

Most non-vegetarian foods are heavy and take a lot of time for our digestive system to streamline them. Digestive fire is of great importance in maintaining good health according to Ayurveda. Consumption of food that Agni has a hard time digesting such as cold, heavy, or too much dry and fibrous foods goes against strengthening it while consuming easier-to-digest types of food strengthens Agni which in turn prevents digestion disorder and Ama (toxic) build up.

Dosha Influence:

Every human being has a specific constitution or dosha this can be Vata, Pitta, and Kapha in combination as well. These doshas are explored and unbalanced with non-vegetarian foods. As an example, meat may increase Kapha (more congestion and sluggishness), and eggs can raise Pitts (cause heat or inflammation).

Health Problems: 

Ayurveda also reveals that eating non-veg foods is the root cause of so many weird diseases like high cholesterol, hypertension, and heart problems. This undigested food can result in a continuous flow of Ama which is one of the leading reasons behind chronic diseases.

Negatives of Consuing Non-Vegetarian Food

According to Ayurveda, it is a very beneficial practice if we avoid eggs, chicken, and meat.
