Types of Fertility Doctors & Specialists

Fertility Doctors

Sexual diseases are very common in our world. But most people don’t consider it important for their lives. People hide it by saying that talking openly about sex is not a good thing. This especially happens in India. People are still unaware of this segment of medical science.

Fertility Doctors are one of these kinds of doctors who treat males & females unable to produce a baby. They are typically gynecologists or urologists. Besides their departmental studies, they have had extra specialized training in dealing with reproductive organs and problems related to them.

If you are facing any type of sexual problems, you can consult these very fertility doctors. People generally choose these fertility doctors when they want to conceive with the help of modern medical science. However, general physicians also can prescribe and conduct primary treatments. But you should be ready to go to a specialist anytime.

Types of Fertility Doctors :

These specialist doctors are generally gynecologists or urologists who have additional practice and expertise in the subjects of sexual diseases. We will here discuss the types of specialists you will meet in an IVF hospital. Read the full blog to get all details.

1. Reproductive Endocrinologists:

Reproductive Endocrinologists are also famous as RE. These people are generally known as experts in infertility & fertility treatment. RE specialists are especially gynaecologists who have specially trained in infertility and fertility treatment. Unlike other doctors, Reproductive Endocrinologists can treat fertility issues of both females & males.

They are experts in the field who can carry out several tests, treatments, and medicines including IUI and IVF. In a general hospital, doctors consult these experts when they need outside interference for some patients.

An RE can also offer fertility prevention for cancer patients. They work alongside oncologists to help preserve before the start of cancer treatments that are harmful to fertility.

 2. Andrologists:

When urologists go through additional intense training in male fertility, they then become Andrologists. They deeply understand the causes and symptoms, effects of male infertility. As they hold expertise over the subject, they can treat this whole by themselves only. However, they often work with endocrinologists to treat male fertility issues in a more accurate way. They can treat cases of low sperm count or even absent sperm count. These doctors, to some extent, are able to help you conceive without IVF treatment.

An Andrologist doctor can also go for a testicular biopsy for use in testicular sperm extraction. They also treat reproductive infections, testicular torsion, undescended testes, and erectile dysfunctions.

3. Reproductive Surgeons:

As the name suggests, a Reproductive Surgeon is heavily trained to perform surgeries. However, you can see several Reproductive Andrologists perform surgeries, they are not considered an expert in this segment. A surgeon can go beyond the issue of being unable to conceive. However, these surgeons also have their primary training in Gynecology or urology.

They can perform these very surgeries.

– Removal of Fibroids or Surgery for Endometriosis.

– Reverse Vasectomies

– Tubal Ligations

4. Reproductive Immunologists:

Reproductive immunologists are doctors who have knowledge of both the fields of immunology and reproduction medicine. They usually work with Reproductive Endocrinologists and scientists to treat infertility in couples. These are experts in understanding the problems related to immunity, general health & fertility, and sexual problems.

You can visit a ‘Reproductive Immunologist’ in cases of unexplained infertility, unexplained IVF failures, and miscarriages. You can also consult them in case of endometriosis, or autoimmune diseases.

Fertility Clinic Staff:

While choosing a clinic for your treatment, make sure you go on the experience & expertise of the doctors rather than the number of staff. In general, the fertility clinic team is run by a Reproductive endocrinologist. You will also see a team of Reproductive Endocrinologists working together to run a hospital. But the new subjects are not so common hence you will not see reproductive immunologists on the staff.

A clinic or hospital may connect with a reproductive immunologist if needed. But you must not expect all expertise to be present in a clinic as there are not sufficient numbers of specialists.

In a clinic, you will see staff other than only doctors. All clinics appoint nurses, technicians, finance managers, and extras. Some may have acupuncturists, nutritionists, and counsellors also. All the nurses there must have expertise in medicines, embryologists, sonographers, and others such as lab technicians.

For all male infertility issues, you must approach a clinic that has an andrologist on its staff board.

When Should You Visit a Fertility Clinic?

If you are surfing through any kind of infertility issues in your life, you need not go directly to a specialist. You can go to a gynecologist or urologist for six to one year of treatment. However, you must visit an expert in case of these below situations.

– If you are having difficulty conceiving for six months when you are & older than 35 years.

– If you are having difficulty conceiving for one year when you are younger than 35 years.

– Have gone through two or more miscarriages.

– If you are trying to conceive, knowing the risk factors or symptoms of infertility.

– In case you want permanent birth control.

– People who are suffering from cancer diagnosis and want to preserve their fertility.

Working With Your OB/GYN:

When you change your fertility doctors, you can have a very overwhelming experience. However, you may not need it. Your place may not be near any fertility clinic. That means you may have to take some days off from your work to visit a doctor.

So till when you should be attached to your regular gynecologists or urologists? If your tests are showing everything okay and you are young then you should be continuing with your regular doctor. Even if there are some mild challenges with your fertility, you can stay with your regular doctor for six months to one year.  But if you are above 35 years of age and facing serious fertility diseases, you must go to a specialist right now.
